How to choose a white paint for Highveld light

White is the most requested colour in every project and the one most often repainted. The reason is light. Johannesburg’s bright, high-altitude daylight is clear and strong, and it changes a white far more than the small card in a paint shop suggests.

Start with the direction of the room

In the southern hemisphere, north-facing rooms get warm sun most of the day. A cool white can look crisp and fresh there. South-facing rooms get softer, cooler indirect light, so a white with a little warmth in it (a hint of yellow, red or brown) stops the walls from looking grey.

Look at the undertone, not the name

Hold your samples against a sheet of plain printer paper. Next to it, the undertone shows straight away: some whites lean pink, some green, some grey. Choose the undertone that suits your floors, joinery and fabrics.

Test big, test on two walls

  • Paint samples at least A3 in size, or use large sample boards you can move.
  • Put one on the wall that gets direct light and one on the darkest wall.
  • Look at them in the morning, at midday and at night under your own lights.

Mind the finish

A matt finish hides uneven walls and looks soft. Eggshell or low sheen is easier to clean in passages and children’s rooms. Ceilings almost always look best in a flat matt white.

If you are stuck between three nearly identical whites, that is completely normal. Book a consultation and we will bring large samples to test in your own light.
